5 Ways on How to Check if Windows Operating System is Valid

Long before Windows 10 came along, there was Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. These previous versions of Windows are all great in their way. These versions also had a lot in common. We all had to purchase either a physical copy and install it and enter the serial key or purchase the activation key should our new computer come pre-installed with a Windows Operating System.

If the user chose not to activate the installed Windows OS, it brought discomfort because if the OS is inactivated, the user would need to restart every 2 hours to keep using the computer.

Gone are those days. The current version, Windows 10, that comes in either Home or Professional versions is available for download and is free of charge. But 30 days after the initial free installation, Windows will ask to activate that version. Should we choose not to activate, there would be changes in our user experience.

Yes, we can still use our computer and be able to receive updates, but some features will be inaccessible and greyed out. Among these are personalization features such as being able to change our desktop wallpaper, lock screen, and themes.

All these results lead to some discomfort, but it is a long way from what it used to be with the previous versions. We can keep using our computer and even get essential updates so that our device will continue to function correctly.

Although product support has already ended for Windows 7, we would still be including it in the versions of Windows that we would be covering to find out ways to verify and know for sure whether our version of Windows Operating System is genuine or not. We will be stating the Windows version in which a particular method would work.

5 Ways to Check Your OS Product Key:

1. For Windows 8.1

First, open the PC Settings. If the first thing you see on the list is PC and Devices, then your Windows 8.1 will most likely be activated. If it is activated, then it’s a Genuine product.

But if you see “Activate Windows” as the first option in the list, then your Windows has not been activated. It may be a Genuine copy that is just needing an official serial key to enable it.

2.  For Windows 7

Click Start and type “Activate Windows” in the search box. Click on “Activate Windows.” If the message “Activation was successful” is written, then your copy of Windows 7 is Genuine. This page will also include the Microsoft software logo promoting “Genuine Support.”

According to The Verge, “Windows 10 held 39.22 percent of desktop OS market share in December 2018, compared to 36.9 percent for Windows 7.

It’s a statistic that’s taken Microsoft three and a half years to achieve, and it demonstrates just how popular Windows 7 has been since its release nearly ten years ago.”

3.  For Windows 10

Because you can download Windows 10 for free, I believe all copies of Windows 10 are genuine. Whether you activate it or not, you can use its full potential minus some features in case you choose not to enable it. There are two methods to use to find out whether your Windows 10 is activated or not.

First, open the Settings app and choose to go to Update and Security. Once there, on the left column of the window interface, click on Activation.

Once selected, a new selection of options will appear on the right column of the window interface. It’s to see the status of your Windows 10 Operating System.

Alternatively, there is another easy way to check whether Windows 10 is activated or not. Begin by opening the Settings app. Once opened, there will be a text displayed at the bottom part of the interface. If it said, “Windows isn’t Activated. Activate Windows now,” surely your Windows 10 has not been activated, and you would need to purchase a product key from Microsoft.

Softvire says that you can also check the validity of your Windows 10 by using PID checker tools that can also be downloaded for free. PID tools verify your product key’s authenticity or whether your Windows 10 is properly activated.

The reason why you need to check the authenticity of the product key is to make sure that it has not been used as a crack code by others.

4.  For Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 via Control Panel

This method works for modern versions of Windows, such as 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. Begin by opening the Control Panel. From here, go to Systems and Security and choose to click System.

From the System section, you will see important information regarding your computer. In this same window interface, scroll down until you find the “Windows Activation” section.

If you are using Windows 8.1 and 10, you will see whether Windows is activated or not. You will also see your Product ID underneath. Should you be using Windows 7, you will see whether Windows is enabled or not.

You will also see your Product ID underneath. But on the right side of these text messages is the “Genuine Microsoft Support” software logo.

5.  For Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 via Command Prompt

This method works for modern versions of Windows, such as 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. It’s also the best method to check whether your Windows version is Genuine and activated.

First of all, open Command Prompt or Power Shell. From this window, type slmgr/xpr. Once you press enter, this command will open the Windows Script Host. This window will inform you about the status of the license of your Windows OS. It may state that your OS is permanently activated or not.

Alternatively, on your keyboard, click the Windows logo and letter “R” to open the Run dialog box. At the Run dialog box, type slmgr.vbs/dli. This command will open the Windows Script Host and will show whether your Windows is licensed or not.

It will also include how much time is left in your license period if your Windows version is a Volume-type, which means that it is connected to the volume license allocated for your company.

But should the window only contain the license status, the partial key, and no deadline for the license, most likely, this means that your Windows OS is genuine.

Conclusion: Get Genuine OS for Best Results

At the initial installation of a genuine Windows Operating System or a cracked version of it, there is not much of a difference. It is when you look at the integrity of your file system after some time that you realize the difference between a genuine one and a cracked one.

A cracked OS will have to be modified so that it would be able to function in a computer without going through the product activation system of Microsoft. The modification will make the cracked version to appear as though it has gone through the activation process.

A cracked version will usually contain malware and spyware. We may not notice it, but the ones that developed that software can, if they chose to, gather information from your computer without letting you know.

Having a genuine Windows Operating System will have security updates made available to deal with such threats. For a better over-all experience, choose to install a genuine Windows OS now or purchase a new device with genuine Windows OS installed.
